Lorrie Sahr Young
I have been married to Mark Young for almost 38 years. We have lived in Mason City for almost all of these years. Mark and I have 9 children and 9 grandchildren, a wild multicultural bunch of remarkable individuals. We are currently parenting a 3- and 5-year-old and just try, at our age, to hold on for the ride!

I have been blessed with a long career in social work and counseling and currently work as the associate director at Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare in Mason City. I look forward to moving into the executive director position at the end of this year.

I am older, grayer, fatter and, hopefully, much wiser.  I have learned that life unfolds with its own plans and I remain excited about what life has in store next. Who could possibly have imagined a 40-year class reunion? Where did the years go?

Lori Scheffel Beatty July 7, 1960 - June 28, 2024

Lori was born July 7, 1960 in Mason City; daughter of LaVerne “Ed” and Dorothy (Best) Scheffel. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1978 and 1980 from Spencer School of Business in Spencer, Iowa. In Spencer she met the love of her life, Kent Beatty. They were united in marriage on August 6, 1983. In 1986 they welcomed their daughter Whitney into their lives. While in Spencer Lori worked at Iowa State Extension Office, Hawkeye Bank, and the Flower Pot. In 1990, they moved to Mason City. In Mason City she worked at Liberty Bank, Principal Financial Group, and for almost 25 years until her retirement in June of 2022 she was a secretary at John Adams Middle School. Of all her roles, her most cherished one was being a grandma to Hayden.

Lori loved spending time outdoors whether it be on the patio, enjoying the many flowers she planted, or going for convertible rides with her husband and friends. She cherished the time she spent with her family. She especially enjoyed the time she spent with her granddaughter Hayden and her granddog Kip. She was so proud to become a grandma and spoiled her every chance she got. She loved holidays and looked forward to decorating her home for each holiday and season. Christmas was her favorite holiday where she went all out on decorating and making her tree look just perfect, every wire had to be hidden. She even had a tree decorated for her favorite team the Iowa Hawkeyes. She and Kent spent many fall Saturdays at Iowa Hawkeye football games. She enjoyed all sports, whether it be her playing 6 on 6 basketball, to attending all of Whitney’s sporting events, to watching all Iowa Hawkeye games, and to becoming a recent Indiana Fever fan! She loved to host gatherings for just about any occasion and was up for playing a card game no matter if it was 10:00 at night. She especially enjoyed playing 500.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Kent; daughter Whitney (Kyle) Germundson; granddaughter, Hayden; granddog Kip, Brother-in-law Kurt (Colleen) Beatty, Sister-in-laws Kelley (John) Molitor, Karla Lunn, and Linda Ringham, as well as nieces and nephews Emily Belk (Christopher), Matthew Beatty, Jennifer Marzen (Ryan), Trevor Molitor (Cassidy), Tanner Molitor, Lexi Lunn, Becca Lunn, Patricia (Benjamin) Bentley, and John Ringham; great nephews and nieces; Jackson Belk, Adeline Belk, Eziekel Marzen, Elijah Marzen, Adalynn Molitor, Kabree Molitor, many friends, and extended family.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Ed and Dorothy Scheffel; brother, Mike Ringham; parents-in-law, Bob and Peg Beatty; nephew, Tyler Molitor; brother-in-law, Ryan Lunn.

Like many have been posting, I can't believe it has been 40 years since we walked out of MCHS as adults. I have lived in several different states and several different cities in Iowa, but Mason City is where my true home is.

I have been married to Michael Servantez for the past 18 years. I have one daughter Casey her husband Tyler and two awesome grandsons, Cole and Boog.

I am an office manager for an Industrial cleaning service in Mason City. I spend many hours quilting, reading and spending time with the grand boys.

Through the years I have learned when you know better you do better and you can't change the past but you can shape your future.

Looking forward to seeing all of you this summer.

I was married in 1981 to Dennis Withers. We then moved to Copper Mountain, Colorado, where we lived for 4 years and had our first child (Amber) in 1983. We then moved to Fort Collins, where we lived for 2 years; then to Canon City, Colorado where both Dennis and I worked for the Department of Corrections. We had our 2nd child (Brandon) in 1991.

We currently have one grandson who is 16. We both are retired now. I retired 7 years ago. Recently we have purchased a home in Mason City, and plan to split our time between Iowa and Colorado. Dennis and I just celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary in June.

Tim Smith
After graduating, I went to NIACC and received an AA degree.  I then transferred to the University of Iowa for a year where I tended to party more than study - which showed up in my grades.  Unable to find work in Mason City or Minneapolis, I decided to join the Air Force in March 1982.

After going through basic training in San Antonio, Texas, and the first part of tech school in Biloxi, Mississippi, I was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where i finished up my tech school training.

In Colorado I met my best friend and the love of my life, Marla Unruh.  After finishing my schooling I started working as a computer maintenance technician at the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex.  After two years with NORAD, I volunteered for an overseas assignment.

Just after Memorial Day 1985, I took my first European assignment and flew to Zweibrucken, Germany.  I would travel to different places in Germany and other European countries during the weekends and on leave, but I wished Marla was there with me to see the sights.  So in September 1986, I took leave to go back to Colorado to marry Marla and move her to Zweibrucken with me.  A few months after our 10-year class reunion, we found out that Marla was pregnant.  Our son, Eddie, was born the following March.  When I was at Zweibrucken I had strained my back a couple times and it started bothering me every so often. During my time at Zweibrucken, I went on temporary duty assignments to Italy for NATO exercises and to Turkey for Operation Desert Storm.  When the Zweibrucken base closed in 1991, I was transferred to Weisbaden.  The pain in my back continued and I went to a clinic there.  They tried various things to alleviate the pain, but to no avail, and I was admitted to the hospital for a month of tests.  I was given a medical discharge in May 1992.

We moved back to Mason City.  I was offered a job in Clinton, Iowa the following January.  About a year later, I started with NCR in Twin Cities and accepted a job as a customer engineer (and I could live back in Mason City).  We eventually bought a house in Mason City and in May 1995, my wife gave birth to our daughter Christina.  I was laid off from NCR later that year.  I was working various places and eventually took a temp position in Cedar Rapids.  This led to a position with Rockwell Collins, first in Iowa City and then in Decorah.

I was tired of being away from my family during the week and having such a long commute so I posted my resume and found a Chicago firm that had an opening in their Schaumburg, Illinois location.  So I moved my family to Rockford, Illinois.  Unfortunately, that company went bankrupt in 2001.  I then worked for a number of electronics companies in the Rockford area until 2013.  The last company I worked for moved overseas to China.  I reevaluated my options and with the college education I received while in the Air Force, I was accepted into the Trade Program with the federal government which paid for up to two years of college.  Because of my previous schooling, they agreed to let me work on finishing my bachelors degree online with Rasmussen College.  I started having health problems back in 2009 and they gradually kept getting worse.  When I was just over a year away from completing my degree, the problems got so bad that I had to stop taking classes.

I am now retired due to my health problems.  My hobbies are now collecting and listening to music (I have over 2,000 albums on vinyl, 500 cassettes and around 500 compact discs) and reading.  Eddie moved back in with us in February, so his room is where I have all of my records and stereo.  Marla and I have started making trips to see Christina in Michigan where she started working year-round at a camp after receiving her Bachelors degree in Youth Ministry from Judson University last year.

Two weeks after our reunion, we will be moving into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment.  A lot bigger and newer than our present apartment.

My favorite memory from high school was Herr Gregory's German class.

Nothing exciting to say about my life. It doesn't feel like it's been 40 years since we graduated. Almost right out of school I got married, had a daughter, Jessica, and lived in Mason City. After about 5 years I got divorced and lived in Mason City.

Went to business school to be a Medical Secretary and that got me started with Mercy Hospital. I ended up working for Neurosurgery of North Iowa and have had every job in the office up until Clinic Manager.  I've worked for Neurosurgery for 30 years. My daughter, whom I'm very proud, is a Critical Care nurse and works for Mercy.

Neurosurgery has been good, I’ve made some long-lasting friendships and have traveled with the job, opportunities I may not have had otherwise. My daughter has given me three, pretty wonderful, grandchildren. Kennedie is 16, Kuper 12 and Emersyn is 9. They live in Mason City also so I have plenty of time to spend with them.

As you can see, I've remained in Mason City through it all.  It's a good place to grow up and raise families.  I will probably work until I'm 100, no big retirement plans. Pretty boring compared to some stories but I'm lucky to have all that I do.

Jim Sutton
I graduated from the University of Iowa and married the love of my life, Wendy, three weeks later. We will celebrate our 36thanniversary in June. We have four kids and three grandkids so far. We live in St Paul, MN.

I started out as a high school English teacher but didn’t really like it much. After earning a master’s degree (also at Iowa), and working many part time jobs, I’ve settled in at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, MN. I have had several positions in academic support, disability services and tutoring. After six years as the director of a large Tutoring Center, with over 50 student employees and staff members, I have spent the last 5 years as an Academic Advisor to get back to working more directly with students. I also teach a course on how to be a more successful student.

Wendy and I enjoy visiting our kids/grandkids, biking, camping, and antiquing. Whenever someone asks me about attending so many antique shows, I always respond that she probably never thought she would have to watch so many baseball games either. I began coaching baseball when we were sophomores in 1976 and finally gave it up after the 2009 season. In that time span, I think I missed 2 seasons, mostly because of moving. I also coached girls’ soccer for about 8 years.

One of my current activities is hanging out with a group of city kids. I have gone on 2 trips to the Boundary Waters with them. This summer we will be doing some service projects within the cities of  St Paul and Minneapolis, so I will be using up my vacation for that. I hope you all have a great time at the reunion, and I will try to make the next one!
